SCAM

The OPP report that forged documents were used in a car dealership scam that has led to charges for a couple from Brampton.

The OPP says Justin Gallant, 38, and Rebecca Foster, 46, both of Brampton, have been charged with fraud over $5,000, use, deals, acts on forged document, and personation with intent (identity fraud).

Dealership employees grew suspicious that customers were using fake identification and forged documents to purchase a vehicle. They contacted the OPP.

OPP officers arrived at the dealership and arrested both individuals while the vehicle transaction was still in progress.

The OPP says what started as a vehicle transaction happened on October 1st around 2 p.m. at a dealership in Quinte West, some 114 kilometres east of Oshawa.

Officers attended the dealership and say that the two suspects tried to obtain a vehicle by using fake identification and forged documents.

Both of the accused were held for a bail hearing.

They are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville at a later date, police say.

The incident has police reminding businesses and members of the public to remain vigilant when conducting financial transactions involving significant purchases.

“Fraudsters continue to use increasingly sophisticated methods, including counterfeit identification documents and stolen personal information, to facilitate fraudulent transactions,” police say.
